When are people going to stop going on about Robert Rodriguez. Ok rebal without a crew is a good book but "that does'nt make him Yoda" It seem to me to that book just gives people too higher opinion of them selves as directors. All that. "the second I closed my eyes and pictured myself making movies. I became a director" is bollocks. your a director as soon as you make somthing decent. if i close my eyes and think of playing for manchester united it doesnt make me a footballer you have to earn the title of director. untill then your a wannabe well thats my opinion anyway.

    p.s
cum on Robert make Spy kids your breakthrough film and prove your great cos deep down we know u can

First of all BITCH! being a director is not the same thing as being a footballer. Robert is an inspiration to us all (the sane ones amoung us) and if you had read his book all the way through you'll know that even he admits that his first efforts were total crap (although he still believed himself to be a director whenever he closed his eyes). People think El Mariachi was his first film but it wasn't.

Go back and read the book again.

I could go on about this for ages but I can't be f**ked because it's 11.30 sunday night.

DESPIN: Thank you! I just finished ranting about this in the "I wanna producer!" topic. I'm fucking sick of it!

Is Robert an inspiration to all of us because he made a good film, or because he made a lot of money and got famous?

This is a important question that will be very revealing.

Interesting indeed. He showed us that it is possible to make a pile of shit movie, sell it to hollywood and then get dirty rich.

That's why I respect the guy.

Just you watch me then. I'm using Robert's method and over the past ten months I've been planning my first low buget feature to be shot in Oxford. Unlike some of the other people that post here I very rarely ask for advice -- I just quietly do it my own way.

I start to shoot the film in December -- There will be a web site for it soon and I will post the address here.

I plan to shoot the movie 100% MARIACHI style -- I'm convinced that if it all goes to plan I WILL SELL THIS MOVIE!

I think Robert Rodriguez made a good film from what equipment and facilities he had.
He showed that with sod all equipment you can knock together a film with patience and good editing.
Buit he also had/has attitude, which no book can teach.
You cant make a quality film that people will pay to see with no money. Thats why a lot of well known film makers started out in horror. Because horror fans are a forgiving audience and big enough to make you a bit of money so that you can go off and make a more sophisticated film afterwards if you must.

Whatever, Rodriguez found his audience (Spanish Video action) who arent expecially fussy. Then he made the film he could for that. THEN he became this whizz kid who could make a film for only 7 grand (no way the finished thing cost that ....) and that was the selling point 'cheapest film ever made...' blah blah blah.
Besides you are all acolytes at the doors to the temple of illusion. RR made a film and wrote a book about it, both illusion. But heaps of cash came rolling in. Its a book. Thats all, personally I think its fairly useful, but more of a motivation book.
    It doesnt help THAT much.

    What a cool thread.

I don't need to read RR's book. Yes, I have a respect for El Mariachi etc and I have respect for RR's marketing prowess. But I read Skywalking ages ago, it's all I needed to realise the reality of how big, non-Hollywood films get made. YES, Lucas operates outside of Hollywood, he is the ULTIMATE FUCKING INDIE FILM-MAKER!!! And he puts back into the industry, he has business acumen, he is a genius. But he needs more practice at directing :-)

I mean, besides film this guy has ILM, Skywalker Sound, LucasArts, Lucas Learning, Lucas Digital ... need I go on? He does not need Hollywood, Hollywood needs him!

You may say he got lucky, granted maybe he did. But he doesn't plug his fucking book all the time does he?!
